WAC Window (Wide Angle Collimated) Display
"CHANGING THE WORLD OF OPTICS"
Collimator Components:
Pictured below is a single channel "WAC" window system where WAC is short for a Wide Angle Collimated.
This "WAC" window is composed of four major components: projector, high definition coated screen, high-quality
spherical mirror, and a MIL-SPEC beam splitter.
How the System Works:
A projector is used to direct a composite image or video onto the imaging screen. Light rays from the screen are
reflected off the beam splitter onto the spherical mirror. The beam splitter is a high-quality, MIL-SPEC glass beam
splitter with a partially reflective coating on one side and an anti-reflective coating on the other. The anti-reflective
coating is located on the user side of the glass to reduce stray reflections from around the room, as well as reduce
ghosting of the intended image. Located on the mirror side of the glass is a semi-reflective coating. This coating
allows light rays from the coated screen to be reflected to the mirror surface while at the same time allowing light
rays reflected from the mirror surface to pass through to the user. Because of the unique shape of the mirror, the
scattered light rays will be collimated.
Collimated light is a bundle of light rays traveling parallel to one another which implies the light will not disperse
with distance. Due to inefficiencies, light rays are unable to be perfectly collimated but are collimated to better
than human perception by this imaging device.
The value of collimated light in simulation and gaming is that it provides the viewer with the most accurate and
realistic depiction of the simulation activity, unlike flat panel trainers.
